A note on the karyotype on the sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus (Pishes, Acipenseridae)

The karyotype of the sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus, from the Czechoslovak stretch of the Danube was studied. The diploid number was determined as 2n=118±4. The chromosome set comprised 9 pairs of large metacentric, 20 pairs of medium to small metacentric, at least 2 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes and 52 to 60 microchromosomes. The elements of the largest acrocentric pair carried achromatic regions near centromeres; they very probably correspond to nucleolus organizers regions. The karyotypes of other acipenseriform species analyzed were compared with present results and briefly discussed.
